Post marathon I began my 2 week end of season break of no running. The body actually felt really good. I had minimal soreness and definitely didn't have the "post marathon shuffle" that I had heard about. After 2 weeks I began some cross training in the pool. I had a few nagging issues going into the marathon so we planned to play it safe upon returning to running. Around 3 weeks when I tried to run, my body decided it wasn't quite ready yet. My lower back was a bit unhappy as well as my right glute. Thankfully my chiro Abe Avender was able to help me with the recovery process.
For the next 2 weeks it was a mix of pool running and a few trials of running. Eventually after 5 weeks my body began to sort itself out and I was able to increase the running. Now 10.5 weeks post marathon I am back into the swing of things, starting back up with minor workouts last week. I can sure tell you that it was frustrating not to be able to get back out there running right away. I mean I had minimal DOMS so I was a bit confused. Turns out my SI/Lower Back was a bit locked up so once that was sorted out everything fell into place.
Now I begin the "get back into shape" phase. My easy runs are normal pace, but the workouts aren't quite there. I am also building back into my long runs. With the next goal race not until Spring I have a bit of time to ease back into everything. No reason to go real crazy yet as I want to be healthy in April.
During my downtime after the marathon I began working with a local VIU Student named Jessie on a video project. Jessie needed a school project and I wanted a fun video, so it was a win-win situation and we began filming and planning in November. After some editing, we are pleased to release the latest edition of the video. Check it out!
